Who Creates The ACT Exam
ACT is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides more
than a hundred assessment, research, information, and program management
services in the broad areas of education and workforce development. Each year, we serve millions of people in elementary and secondary.
What does "ACT" stand for?
Originally, "ACT" stood for American College Testing. In 1996,
however, the official name of the organization was shortened to simply
"ACT." This change in the official company name was made to better
reflect the broad array of programs and services we now offer beyond college
entrance testing.
When was ACT founded?
In 1959.
Where is ACT located?
Our national headquarters are in Iowa City, Iowa. We also have regional offices
across the U.S. and a number of international locations.
Does ACT have stockholders?
No. ACT is a private, not-for-profit organization.
How long has ACT been a not-for-profit organization?
Since its inception. ACT was incorporated under the Nonprofit Corporation Act
in 1960 and was granted exemption from federal income tax under
Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code in 1965.
When did ACT begin offering workforce development programs and
services in addition to educational assessments?
In the early 1990s.
Is ACT a part of the University of Iowa?
No, ACT is not affiliated with the University of Iowa. Our co-founders,
E.F. Lindquist and Ted McCarrel, were both faculty members at the
university when they started ACT in 1959, but the company has always been a
separate entity.
